How to get a Roblox animation ID

An animation ID is a number like rbxassetid://1234567890. Your scripts use it to play a move. You get one when you publish an animation to Roblox from your own account or group. Here is how to do it with any free animation from the Kitpop library.

Quick answer: Download the .rbxmx file → put it in Roblox Studio → Save to Roblox → copy the ID from the Toolbox.

Why you need your own ID

Roblox only plays an animation in games that are allowed to use it. When you publish the animation yourself, your own games can use it. So the safest way is simple: publish it from the same account or group that owns your game.

That is also why Kitpop gives you a file and not a ready ID. An ID we published would belong to us, not to your game.

What you need

  • Roblox Studio, with your game open
  • A free animation file (.rbxmx) from the Kitpop library (sign in to download)
  • An R15 character in your game. Kitpop animations are made for R15.

Step 1: Add a rig

A rig is a test character to play the animation on.

  1. In Studio, open the Avatar tab (or the Home tab) and click Character.
  2. Pick an R15 rig. It shows up in your game and in the Explorer as Rig.

Step 2: Bring in the animation

  1. Download the .rbxmx file from the animation's page.
  2. Drag the file into the Studio window.
  3. It shows up in the Explorer as an animation file (a KeyframeSequence) with a name that starts with KP_.

Step 3: Publish it to Roblox

Way A: right-click

  1. In the Explorer, right-click the KeyframeSequence.
  2. Choose Save / Export → Save to Roblox…

Way B: Animation Editor

  1. Open the Animation Editor from the Avatar tab.
  2. Select your rig, then open the animation.
  3. Click the ⋯ button and choose Publish to Roblox.

Both ways open the Asset Configuration window:

  1. Type a name, like "Katana combo".
  2. Is your game owned by a group? Pick that group in the Creator box. This step is easy to miss, and when it is missed, the animation won't play in that game.
  3. Click Submit.

Step 4: Copy your animation ID

  1. Open the Toolbox and go to your animations.
  2. Right-click your new animation and copy its asset ID.

That number is your animation ID.

Step 5: Use it in your game

Play it on a key press or an event

Put this in a LocalScript inside StarterPlayerScripts. Change the number to your ID.

local Players = game:GetService("Players")

local player = Players.LocalPlayer
local character = player.Character or player.CharacterAdded:Wait()
local humanoid = character:WaitForChild("Humanoid")
local animator = humanoid:WaitForChild("Animator")

local move = Instance.new("Animation")
move.AnimationId = "rbxassetid://YOUR_ID_HERE"

local track = animator:LoadAnimation(move)
track:Play()

Replace a default move (walk, run, idle…)

Want every player to walk like a ninja? Roblox's docs show how: add a Script to ServerScriptService and set the IDs in the player's Animate script. The slots are walk.WalkAnim, run.RunAnim, idle.Animation1, jump.JumpAnim, fall.FallAnim, climb.ClimbAnim and swim.Swim. Full script: Roblox docs: Use animations.

Our movement packs list which clip goes in which slot.

Common problems

"My animation doesn't play in the game."
Check who published it. It should be the same account or group that owns the game. If the game is in a group, publish again and pick the group in the Creator box.

"I pasted an ID from the Avatar Shop and it doesn't work."
A shop (catalog) ID is not an animation ID. Roblox's own example: the Ninja Run item is 658830056 in the catalog, but its animation ID is 656118852.

"My new run stops or looks wrong."
When a clip replaces a default move, Roblox asks you to rename the last keyframe to End (with a capital E) before you publish. Do it in the Animation Editor: right-click the last keyframe and rename it.

"My attack doesn't show while I walk."
In the Animation Editor, set the animation's priority to Action before you publish. Higher priority wins over walking and idle.

"The character looks broken."
Kitpop animations are for R15. If your game uses R6 characters, they won't fit.
